That difference decides where it belongs: radar keeps working in a warm corridor where a PIR switch has stopped distinguishing people from the air around them, it sees through plastic diffusers and thin panels so the sensor can be hidden inside a fitting, and it is not blinded by a doorway draught. It is also the wrong answer in some rooms. We explain where below. What makes it worth specifying over a fixed-parameter switch is that all three commissioning variables — how far it reaches, how long it holds, and how dark it has to be before it will act — are set on the unit itself, so one part number covers a lift lobby, a mid-corridor run and a service stair. Neither gives a usable inductive, capacitive or LED-driver rating, so motors, transformers and LED-driver installations need written derating on the quotation. Ask about TDL-1915 The factory's TDL-1915 product sheet, with its ambiguous load row masked. Inductive and LED-driver loads are confirmed on the quotation. ## The through-wall property is a feature and a commissioning hazard The factory's own range diagram shows the detection field it wants you to plan around — roughly an 8 m radius hemisphere from the ceiling down to the floor — and then, separately, that the field extends approximately 1–2 m through a wall, varying with the sensitivity setting. Read that second figure twice, because it cuts both ways. It is the reason radar can be concealed above a plasterboard soffit or behind a diffuser and still work, which no PIR switch can do. It is equally the reason a unit commissioned at full sensitivity in a small bathroom can be triggered by someone walking past in the corridor outside, and the room light will appear to switch itself on for nobody. That is the single most common complaint about microwave switches, it is a commissioning error rather than a fault, and it is fixed by turning the distance trimmer down to suit the room instead of leaving it at maximum. What to do about it: specify the sensitivity setting per room type at order stage, not per project, and have the installer prove the boundary by walking the far side of every wall before signing the room off. If the layout puts a busy circulation route directly behind a small enclosed room, use PIR there and keep radar for the open runs. ## Choosing between the two Radar suits warm corridors, stairwells and plant areas; sensors that must be hidden inside or behind a fitting; and spaces where PIR range has visibly collapsed in summer. PIR suits small enclosed rooms with traffic on the other side of a partition, and any space where you need detection to stop hard at the wall line. Neither reliably holds a light on for someone completely still. For that you need presence sensing: TUODI's 2026 catalogue lists a 24 GHz presence range (see the switch hub), not yet radio-certified. Ask early if your project needs it. See hand-wave switches. Ingress ratings — read this before you specify anything outdoors. The TDL-2076WB and TDL-2086 carry an IP54 marking. It is the factory's own marking, not a third-party test, and the factory does not recommend either model outdoors. Specify both as indoor products. Read every IP number here the same way: without a named test report beside it, it is a manufacturer's marking, not a tested rating. Certification — confirm before you specify. No CE/RED, RoHS or FCC document is on file for the switch range. For the TDL-1915, CE/RED can be quoted as project work; no FCC ID is currently available. Anyone quoting a "sensor light market growth rate" from figures like these is inventing it. Use them to ask better questions of your supplier — that is what they are good for. The figures are reproduced from each company's own published release solely to reason about sourcing decisions. Nothing here is investment advice or a view on any company's prospects or securities. ## The short answer The market is not moving in one direction. Basic lighting hardware is getting harder to differentiate, while controls, intelligent-space systems and professional project work show better momentum. At the same time retailers and brands are managing inventory cautiously — so factory orders can weaken while end customers are still buying. For a buyer, the useful response is not to chase features. It is to choose the right sensing technology for the application, cut inventory risk, confirm serviceability, and build a replenishment path that can react. ## Start with the buying job The same product can be a good fit for one buyer and a poor fit for another. The value around lighting is accumulating in control behaviour, application fit, installation, servicing and documentation. Ask what a supplier knows about those, not just what it costs. A quiet quarter is not proof the category is dying. Signify's results separate strong consumer sell-through from weak sell-in caused by retailer destocking. If your own orders paused, work out which of those you are looking at before you change your assortment. Ask for flexibility, not only the lowest opening price. When channels are cautious, smaller pilots, mixed models, later-applied packaging and shorter repeat-order lead times reduce more risk than a few cents of unit cost. Cash tied up in the wrong variant is the expensive mistake. Buy connectivity for an outcome, not for the spec sheet. Tuya's own numbers show hardware margins far below platform margins. An app adds cost, support burden and a certification route. Pay for it when it delivers integration, diagnostics, automation or energy reporting — not because it sounds modern. Professional and project channels look steadier than discretionary DIY. If you integrate, specify or distribute repeatedly — furniture programmes, hotel retrofits, corridor and display lighting — you are in the part of the market that held up better. Ask what a price quote is exposed to. Component and tariff volatility appeared across these results. A supplier should be able to tell you quote validity, the main price drivers, which alternative components are approved, and which component changes would require re-testing. ## Do not jump from sample to scale A lower-risk order path has four gates. Each gate answers a different question and should have its own acceptance conditions. 1 · Sample ## Does this exact configuration work? Lock the model, sensing mode, power, finish and provisional documents. Agree what will be tested and what is still unknown. 2 · Pilot ## Can the buyer launch without excess stock? Test a limited first run. Ask whether models can be mixed and whether labels or private packaging can wait until demand is clearer. 3 · Replenish ## Can the winner be repeated? Confirm the unchanged specification, quote validity, repeat lead time, approved substitutions and the trigger for a new sample or document review. 4 · Scale ## Is the programme ready for commitment? Move to full packaging, forecasts or buffer stock only after the pilot proves sell-through, quality, servicing and operational response. This is a buyer-side control model, not a blanket factory promise. Mixed models, neutral stock, packaging timing, repeat lead time and buffer stock vary by model and order. Put each requested option on the quotation and production specification. ## When connected lighting earns its cost An app, radio or smart-home badge does not create value by itself. Before paying for connectivity, require five answers: a named user outcome; an owner for firmware and support; a destination-market radio route; a useful fallback when the network is unavailable; and enough commercial value to cover hardware, testing and after-sales burden. Connectivity is easier to justify for integration, remote configuration, diagnostics, multi-device coordination or energy reporting than for a product whose whole job is to turn on when a wardrobe door opens. ## Presence sensing: a premium tool, not the new default Millimetre-wave presence sensing detects fine movement and, in suitable designs, a person who is sitting still — the exact failure of ordinary motion sensing, where the light drops out because nobody moved. Texas Instruments and Infineon both position mmWave for occupancy and lighting control, and consumer products from Aqara, Meross and SwitchBot now combine PIR with mmWave, including battery formats. It is genuinely useful where stationary presence matters: offices, meeting rooms, bathrooms, reading areas, hotel rooms. It is usually unnecessary for a wardrobe or cabinet light that only needs to react when a door opens — and radar's ability to sense through panels is an active disadvantage inside furniture, because it triggers through the closed door. It also is not free. Published 1,000-unit prices for some 57–64 GHz industrial radar devices sat around US$11–16 at the time of review — silicon alone, before the antenna, MCU, power management, enclosure, firmware tuning, certification and support. That is most of the selling price of a commodity cabinet light. Radio compliance depends on frequency, modulation, output, antenna and destination market, and using a pre-certified module does not automatically make the finished product compliant. Budget the compliance route, not just the part. Anything that transmits — radar and mmWave included — generally falls under radio-equipment rules in most markets, which is a materially longer and costlier route than the EMC file a non-transmitting light needs. On this range, sensor switches are not held in stock pre-certified. Project certification may be quoted only where a suitable route exists, and a lab quote is not an authorization. The TDL-1915 has no radio certificate today. If your schedule assumes a certificate already exists, ask before you commit to a launch date — for any supplier, not just this one. What we offer today. Eight answers to get before you commit to presence sensing, from any supplier: a clear use case; an acceptable premium; stationary detection demonstrated on a sample, not claimed; false triggers controlled, and measured how; the power target met; a module supplier that can scale; a stated compliance route; and who owns the firmware and the test evidence. ## Serviceability is becoming a specification, not a nicety EU Regulation 2023/1542 applies from 18 February 2027 and generally requires portable batteries in products to be readily removable and replaceable by the end user, with defined derogations and exceptions, and requires compatible replacement batteries to remain available as spare parts for a stated minimum period. Scope, exemptions and product-specific obligations need qualified compliance review — this page is not legal advice, and we will not tell you your product is in or out of scope. The commercial logic holds regardless of where the legal line falls. For hotels, rental and furniture programmes, a light whose battery can be swapped without unmounting the fixture cuts maintenance cost and warranty exposure, and creates a spare-parts line. Compare four architectures against your own numbers: sealed battery, removable light bar, removable battery card, and wired low-voltage. The right answer depends on how often the light is used, how many units you install, who maintains them and how long the programme is meant to last. Not if they have a daylight (photocell) sensor — most TUODI models switch only below a threshold (typically around 10 lux), so they ignore daytime traffic and save battery. PIR sees moving body heat and needs line of sight — ideal inside furniture, lowest battery drain. Ask for the exact model and length, cell chemistry, rated capacity, pack dimensions, protection functions, charging input and time, whether the product can operate while charging, and the runtime test basis. For shipping, map the current UN 38.3 test summary and MSDS/SDS to the actual cell in that build; a report for another cell does not cover the whole light family. Treat printed mAh figures as factory-stated until your approved sample or an agreed capacity check verifies the exact pack. Can one sensor control several cabinet-light bars? Only on a system designed for linked control. Standard rechargeable PIR or radar bars normally sense and time themselves independently. The TDL-6110XRF-DJ platform separates the sensor/remote from the joined light bars and synchronises a run; current factory guidance is best within six bars per remote.
